Barri Vell is the name of Girona 's historic district. The area begins at Gran Via avenue, from the medieval wall that was demolished in the 19 th century, and stretches all the way to the Passeig de la Muralla. The route passes the houses on the Onyar. The bright oranges and yellows of the houses exude the feel and atmosphere of a bygone age. From there, the architectural wonders continue to astound with the baroque lines of the Pujada de Sant Domenec and the church of Sant Feliu and, further on, the ancient monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants. Finally, the path leads to the majesty that is the Girona cathedral, with the widest gothic nave in all of Europe, which stands along the most unique of urban areas, the old Jewish quarter known as the Call.
The old walls of Girona are equally interesting and hold quite a bit of history. Portions of the wall were demolished at various times in history, but today have been rebuilt to recreate Girona 's historical appearance for the sake of cultural interest. From the parapets, one can take in awesome views of Girona from spectacular angles. The longest stretch of wall can be reached from the Jardi d'Infancia, on the banks of the Onyar river. The Sant Pere section is another fantastic viewpoint over the Passeig Arqueologic and the Girona cathedral.
Pedret is a quaint little neighborhood that lies along the river Ter. The vicinity is set in the Sant Daniel valley, known in earlier times as the Vall Ombrosa ( shady valley ) because of its dense greenery. It is a lovely place for a walk.
